Sugar prices drop to Sh5000 in Uganda, farmers get less returns

Sugar prices in Uganda have dropped from Sh5,500 to Sh5,000, causing satisfaction among consumers but concern among sugarcane farmers. Various sugar factories, including Kaliro, Lugazi, Mayuge, GM, Bugiri Sugar, and Kinyara, have adjusted their sugarcane prices due to the decline. The Uganda Sugarcane Growers Association (USGA) expressed worry as the new sugarcane price falls below the break-even point, potentially affecting farmers' ability to repay loans. The drop in sugar prices is attributed to a global surplus, with increased production in Brazil and the resumption of sugar production in Kenya after a four-month shutdown. Cases of illegal sugar imports into Uganda are also contributing to the decline in sugarcane prices.
