The All India Poultry Breeders Association (AIPBA) and the Compound Livestock Feed Manufacturers Association (CLFMA) report a maize shortage in India.
Alka Upadhyaya, Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, informed the Department of Food and Public Distribution about the issue.
Maize production is estimated at 36 MMT, while the demand is 41 MMT, including for ethanol blending.
Maize prices have risen above the minimum support price, currently selling at Rs. 28 per kg.
The DGFT has allowed the import of 4.98 lakh MT of non-GM maize through NAFED with a 15% import duty.
Upadhyaya suggested reducing the import duty to zero and increasing the import quota to 5.0 MMT.
Maize is crucial for livestock feed, making up 65% of poultry feed and 15% of cattle feed, with a demand of 23.40 MMT for the livestock sector.
Rising maize prices are expected to increase the cost of animal feed, affecting the production costs of milk, meat, eggs, and fish.
